Headaches! I have had a number of friends mention headaches over the past few days, all looking for ways to alleviate them. I personally love to have a neck massage as the cause of any headache I may get is usually tension in that area! Headaches can start when least expected and be very debilitating. If ,like me, you don’t like taking conventional pain relief what can you do to relieve them? Essential oils may help to relieve minor headaches and can certainly improve your mood. This can help us keep away from the pain killers!
There are a HUGE number of different types of headache and we are only going to suggest some helpful tips here. Please do remember that for serious headaches that stay a long time it is a good idea to visit your Doctor.
As an Aromatherapist I have been working with and blending oils for a number of years. If this is something that interests you and you would like to learn more then please do ask about our course at Evanji. We offer online courses too.
Essential oils Beneficial to Alleviating Headaches –
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus or radiata) contains a significant amount of the oxide 1,8-Cineole. This is said to act as an anti-inflammatory. Eucalyptus eases headaches, especially those associated with sinus conditions.
Helichrysum has particular anti-infammatory properties.
Lavender, not my favourite oil as I don’t like the smell, has a high percentage of esters (linalyl acetate) so making it anti-inflammatory and a sedative. Perfect for use in the evening and over night.
Roman Chamomile, my go to alternative to Lavender, has a high percentage of esters (isobutyl angelate) and so like Lavender is an anti-inflammatory and sedative. Use in the evening and over night in just the same way.
Peppermint Essential Oil has a large amount of Menthol. This is known to help relax and ease tension headaches. It also relieves muscular aches and pains. Best used in the morning though as it is very stimulating.
Spearmint Essential oil doesn’t have as much Menthol as Peppermint but many people prefer the aroma. It isn’t as harsh or penetrating.
To make a blend of oils why not try a couple of drops of Lavender with a drop of Roman Chamomile in a carrier oil such as Grapeseed oil. This can be used with massage or in warm bath. My favourite way of enjoying the Aromas are in an essential oil Locket. This way I get to enjoy them all day….
