60 Years of the DofE Award Scheme.

So today I was mentoring a group of Young Enterprise students and we started discussing other groups I had worked with within schools! Back in the 1990’s I was teaching at Hatch End High School and had the privilege to be asked to over see the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Over the course of 3 years we went from one group of bronze participants to multiple groups progressing onto the silver award. I was young enough to complete my direct entry Gold Award and decided to work alongside the students to finish it.

It was a fabulous opportunity to help youngsters develop skills, to complete expeditions, to volunteer and to improve their physical fitness. For my own sections I learned sign language and supported a hearing impaired gentleman from India to learn English, I swam, I created costumes and I completed my 4 day expedition by kayak!

This last year has seen the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. A challenge was set down to complete one of the sections and raise funds to help support the Award scheme. So what did I do??
