We’ve been having some fabulous weather here in the UK at the moment. Lots of blue skies and warm sunshine. I loved having a short nap on the decking and I have lots of friends that have been tidying their gardens. As a result there have been lots lots of people ‘looking like lobsters’ or ‘beetroot’ because they have had a bit too much sun!!
So, do you use sun protection? Often we look for the highest factor sunscreen if we have sensitive skin..but that’s not always the best. Any factor above a 30 isn’t always able to be guaranteed and it is better to nourish your skin regularly by applying a factor 20 or 30.
The ingredients in your sunscreen are vitally important. Have you ever had the misfortune to experience ‘prickly heat’? This is very itchy and really uncomfortable and often caused by the very products we are using to protect us from the sun! If your suncare has mineral oil, petrolatum or a similar petrolium based product they it sits on the surface of your skin, not allowing it to breathe. This keeps the heat in. The only way to help is to wash it off and cool down.

100g Coconut oil
60ml Olive oil
30g Zinc Oxide
15 drops of essential oils such as Lavender & Chamomlie. No Citrus oils.
10ml Aloe Vera gel. *
2ml Vitamin E
- Melt the coconut oil and olive oil in a glass bowl over a pan of hot water.
- Stir in the Zinc Oxide
- As the mixture cools (35-40C) add the essential oils and whisk in the aloe vera gel
- Add the vitamin E and stir.
- Decant into a sterile jar and put the lid on.
